Participation in Occupation - Assignment

As part two of our assignment for Participation in Occupation, (creating this blog is part one) we had to choose a setting and write a report requesting funding for a piece of assistive technology to be used within the setting.

I have chosen to purchase three digital cameras for a setting that was similar to my last placement which was in an "in-patient mental health unit". The aim for the Occupational Therapist is to encourage participation in activities and occupations of daily living in the hope that they will develop the knowledge, confidence and understanding to enable them to move on to live in supported accommodation within the community. I chose to purchase the digital cameras as an activity to engage the clients in.

The good thing about this technology in this setting is that I can actually see them using and benefiting from doing this activity. There were some creative and artistic people on the placement and because of the ease of using the technology I could see a number of the clients being drawn to this participate, especially after they see their results printed out on paper and start to put together their photos in a scrap book (scrapbooking) or poster for themselves.

Another benefit of this activity was the possibility of the clients getting some exercise as very few go outside just for a walk, for the sake of it being a walk. We could incorporate walking to places or parks within the community into the activity and discover all the good things in the neighbourhood.
